Ekhator School of Music

In 1999, The Ekhator School of Music became part of the First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Irvington. Mr. Harrison Ekhator, Minister of Music at FPC, decided to offer free piano lessons to anyone who wanted them instead of taking a vacation that year.

The piano school started with approximately six students from the church, & from Mr. Ekhator’s heart of generosity, selflessness, & commitment, has grown to enroll between 75-100 students a year from different churches in the state of New Jersey.

Knowing that parents play an integral part in a child’s dedication to the music program, In 2011, Comfort Adjei joined the school as the Parent Coordinator and instituted the first parent meeting and fundraising activities. The ESOM PTA is dedicated to the development of student musicians & hosts fundraisers throughout the year to support the music school.

Every December, students present a piano recital that offers the community an opportunity to hear the talent and skill the children have acquired throughout the year. This December the school is celebrating its 22nd anniversary.

For over twenty years, Mr. Ekhator and volunteer teachers have dedicated each Saturday to helping children learn and appreciate the gift of music. They have opened the doorway of music on a level deeper than many of the students would have experienced otherwise. The musical training and discipline the students receive help them achieve success in many other realms.
